Serious Games: Book Presentation and Artist Talk
It
is with great pleasure that the Municipal Art Gallery of Chania announces an
event to celebrate the bilingual (Greek/English) publication of Serious Games
by Jenny Marketou which will take place from 7pm to 9pm on Monday, July 18 at CAM, Center of Mediterranean Architecture.
The
launch event is sponsored by the Municipal Art Gallery of Chania and the
Municipality of Chania, Crete and brings together an interdisciplinary group of
speakers which consists of Jenny Marketou, the artist and the book’s curator,
Vassiliki Yiakoumaki, Anthropologist, Professor University of Thessaly, Elia
Vardaki, Social Anthropologist, Researcher at the Technical University of
Crete, Christos Fradellos, Religious Scholar, Jason Francisco, Professor Emory
University and Fulbright Scholar and Dimitris Barnias, Music Producer and Composer will present his
environmental composition titled “Dytikos”.
The
invited speakers will discuss in different but interrelated ways, Serious
Games, within the framework of contemporary art process and centering around
themes of ruination, defacement and the afterlives of
monuments such as Yiali Tzami. What kind of potentialities are opening up in
those monuments and how art generates new experiences, engages in new
ways of knowledge production, and invites the public to think alongside Serious
Games, in search of new forms of embodied experiences, alliances,
possibilities, temporalities for collective imaginaries, action and play.
The
publication Serious Games emerged from the collection of commissioned new
essays by Vassiliki Yiakoumaki, Amalia Kotsaki, Myrto Kontomitaki among others
which are informed by the theoretical framework and contemporary artistic
practices proposed by Serious Games as well as from photo documentation and an
archive of all material collected by the artist during research and during the
process for the realization of Serious Games at Giali Tzami (Mosque) as a
commission from the Municipal Art Gallery of Chania.
“Here is some documentation from the art talk and launch of the book Serious Games which took place on a hot summer day on July 18 at CAM in Chania. Monumentoclasm: Anticolonial Imagination
De-colonization, art / architecture and public space
Jenny Marketou / Olga Touloumi / Jilly Traganou: in collaboration with Serious Games / Municipal Art Gallery of Chania (Oct. 30) on ZOOM
We are very excited to announce our second open workshop Monumentøclasm!
Through discussions, readings, exercises and experimental collaborative actions, our aim is to connect the creative and critical practices, debates and forms of activism reshaping monumental landscapes at various sites around the world to the Greek context, while at the same time illuminating Greek traditions of defacement –both political and artistic– as modalities of political action and historical reckoning.
Τhe workshop has been organized in collaboration with the Memory-Monuments Working Group

The Decolonize Hellas initiative is working to (re)view the place of contemporary Greece in relation to geographies and genealogies of European colonialism.
