The Region of Crete organizes in cooperation with the cities of Heraklion and Chania the first visual art exchange of two important artists, George Thomas Georgiadis and George Kounalis. The retrospective exhibition George Kounalis. In art as in life opened at Saint Mark’s Basilica in Heraklion on May 20th and then on May 23rd the retrospective exhibition George Thomas Georgiadis. Beauty and Truth. Painting in a classic, austere and simple manner opened at the Municipal Art Gallery of Chania.
The curators of Georgiadis retrospective exhibition Dr Constantinos V. Proimos and Manolis Karterakis note that George Thomas Georgiadis was a great painter and very restless artist with rich work that explored all kinds of painting, landscapes, interiors, still life, portraits, nudes and allegorical themes. Having a long experience abroad and in Athens, he returned to his native city, Heraklion, where he continued his art with modesty and morals but always with passion and emotion and he won the recognition, respect and affection of his fellow citizens as both creator and as a teacher. A multifarious man, he was a talented musician, set designer and playwright who became rich with the presence of the artistic world of the city.
Everybody’s hope is to follow up on the initiative of the Region of Crete in the future to explore the artistic legacy of Crete and to be promoted the cultural syncretism.
