Cris Gianakos – SITE

In the exhibition SITE at the Municipal Art Gallery of Chania between the 10th of June and the 10th of September, Gianakos invites the viewer to enter his world of ongoing studies of interventions, either as a marriage between materials and a specific place, or as an investigation of the basic formal structure of ancient sites – their geometry and their foundation on mathematical calculations.

To place something where there was nothing there before, different aspects require consideration such as scale and the human body, but also the surrounding: is it inside or outside? Is there nature or buildings around? Are the mountains close, or does the air smell of sea? How will it look in bright sunshine, or even during rain and lightning?

SITE includes new installations, documentation of older site-specific work, drawings, prints and sculptures.

Cris Gianakos (1934) grew up in New York City, with parents coming from the area around Kissamos, Chania. He is part of the post-Minimalism movement and has more than 50 site-specific installations both in Europe and the United States on his CV, numerous solo-exhibitions as well as his work in public collections, such as MoMA in New York. He lives and work in New York and in Chania.
